Our story
Why We Started Grower Next Door
The Problem
We live on Vancouver Island, where backyard gardens are everywhere. Tomatoes, zucchini, apples, herbs, and more grow in abundance each season.
But there is a disconnect. Surplus produce often goes unused, while neighbours nearby still rely on grocery stores for the same items. Perfectly good food ends up wasted simply because people are not connected.
How It Started
The idea began with a simple observation: Vancouver Island produces a huge amount of homegrown food, yet much of it has no clear path to someone who can use it. Fruit drops from trees, extra zucchini piles up, and herbs overflow garden beds.
That raised an important question: what if neighbours could find each other more easily?
Grower Next Door was created to make that connection simple. It is a local marketplace where people can share what they grow, discover fresh produce close to home, and keep more food within the community.
From the start, we focused on building something practical and trusted. We spoke with neighbours, gathered feedback at community gardens, and ran surveys to understand what people actually needed. The message was consistent: a straightforward platform for buying, selling, and sharing local produce would be genuinely useful.
Grower Next Door is now turning that idea into reality, supporting local growers, reducing waste, and helping neighbours connect one harvest at a time.
